Global cable seal manufacturer Roxtec is reporting rapid growth in the European data centre market increasing sales by 107pc in 2018.
The news comes as the £173million turnover group prepares to exhibit at Data Centre World taking place at London Excel Arena on March 12 and 13.
Roxtec data centre expert Jason Hood, who is travelling from the USA to present at the event, said the firm is now supplying products to all ‘Hyperscale’ data centres. Key territories driving growth include the UK, Ireland, Germany, Belgium, Netherlands, Croatia, Finland and Spain.
Mr Hood said Roxtec’s safety seals are specifically used to protect data centres and server halls against fire, water, rodents, air leakage, lightning, humidity and electromagnetic disturbances to ensure nonstop operation.
“Roxtec is experiencing strong sales growth in line with the rapid global expansion of cloud services and the ‘Internet of Things’,” said Mr Hood. “The European market continues to hold huge potential for Roxtec. This has been highlighted in many recent reports, including the likes of Computer Weekly which forecasts the European data centres sector to grow by nearly 20pc by 2020. According to Data Centre Pricing (DCP), the UK market alone is expected to invest in 40,000sqm of new data centre space per year. While Roxtec is recording solid growth across the continent there are a number of key regions we will target in 2019 and beyond. This includes the Netherlands, Denmark, Belgium and Ireland. Further afield we see large growth potential in the US and Singapore.”
Mr Hood said Roxtec’s specialist seals crucially guard against outages which cost data centre operators an average of £550,000, according to The Ponemon Institute’s 2016 ‘Cost Of Data Center Outages’ report.
“Roxtec’s certified sealing solution delivers a number of core benefits to data centre customers,” said Mr Hood. “They are fire-proof, gas-tight and water-tight. They also prevent any air leakage so operators can easily control climate and temperature, eliminate risk to equipment and lower energy costs. Our openable seal design also provides spare capacity for growing data centres. Roxtec seals can be used for single or multiple cables or pipes, in outer walls, between compartmentalised security zones and in control cabinets. Furthermore, they are adaptable to power, fibre, coax and signal cables as well as cooling pipes of different sizes and materials. The removable layers on the sealing module ensure a perfect fit to any cable or pipe, providing an ideal solution for pre-terminated cables.”

Jason Hood – Data Centre World presentation
Roxtec data centre expert Jason Hood will deliver a presentation on ‘Water Mitigation Considerations for Data Centre Hardening’ on March 12 at 14.50 at the 2019 edition of Data Centre World. The session will be held in the Data Centre Design and Build & Physical Security Theatre.
With recent reports indicating an increased threat of extreme weather-related events and rising sea levels due to climate change, critical infrastructure is expected to become more threatened by water infiltration and flooding. For communication infrastructure, including data centres, it is critical to reduce the risk of downtime to maintain operational reliability. While site selection might offer the best protection, for some locations, data centre hardening might be the only option. Adopting effective sealing designs of openings in data centres as a best practice could effectively mitigate risk and should be considered in data centre hardening strategies. Jason has recently produced a white paper on this topic.
