Polaris helps manage media for Sir David Attenborough keel laying ceremony
Polaris has helped manage the media for the keel laying ceremony of the new £150million polar research vessel the Sir David Attenborough at Cammell Laird shipyard in Liverpool City Region.
The event which was attended by more than 1000 people including Sir David was the biggest ceremony at the yard for almost 30 years.
Polaris director Ben Pinnington said the ceremony attracted the most media of any press call at the yard since he had started handling its media affairs in 2008.
Polaris worked with press teams at the British Antarctic Survey (BAS), the National Environmental Research Council (NERC) and the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) to organise the media for the event. Polaris also provided input into speech writing for the Cammell Laird directors as well as media interview advice.
The event was seen as one of national significance with BBC One Breakfast, ITV’s Good Morning Britain, Sky TV, BBC Radio Four Today programme all reporting live from the ceremony with national BBC One news running the story on its main bulletins at Six and Ten later in the day. The Liverpool Echo, BBC NWT and Granada Reports also reported from the shipyard together with Getty, PA and BBC Radio Merseyside. In total the day generated more than 70 articles and news reports in 24 hours hitting an audience of millions.

Ben said: “Polaris specialises in organising media around major maritime events,” he said. “We have managed numerous big announcements at Cammell Laird including the RFA contract in 2008, the brand relaunch in 2008, the aircraft carrier ceremony in 2010 and the launch of the Western Ferries in 2013. However, this was the biggest to date and involved a considerable amount of organisation and planning.”
Other major maritime events Polaris has promoted include Princess Anne’s Christening of the ACL ship Atlantic Sea in Liverpool also in October 2016, the 200th and 300th drydocking milestones at Oman Drydock in the Middle East in 2014 and 2015 and the launch of the Mamola Reliance Platform Supply Vessel by Swiss ship manager Promar in Barcelona in 2015.
